Kindergarten Pupils’ Ability to Comprehend the Lexical Meanings of Indonesian Nouns

ABSTRACT
This research concerns pupils’ understanding of the lexical meaning of nouns in Indonesian. The aim of this research is to discuss their comprehension on the lexical meaning of nouns using a semantic approach, and, also, to see the suitability of the lexical meaning of nouns given by the teachers in classes with references from the Big Indonesian Dictionary. The methods used are observation, questionnaires, interviews, and libraries. The findings from 18 samples were only 10 students who understood the lexical meaning of nouns and after being explained in class the pupils’ abilities increased with the results showing that 14 pupils got good and very good grades and 6 who were less good. From this research, teachers are expected to be more active in providing understanding of word meaning, especially lexical meaning.
