ABSTRACT

Background of study: Elevated intraocular pressure, a key risk factor of ocular hypertension which results to most cases of glaucoma has been seen to be associated with systemic hypertension, with obesity also being a risk factor in systemic hypertension. However, limited studies in Nigeria has correlated intraocular pressure, systolic blood pressure and body mass index, hence, this study aims at determining the correlation between intraocular pressure and systolic blood pressure among different body mass indexes in Nigeria.
Methods: 146 subjects were selected for the research. The Perkins tonometer was used to measure the intraocular pressure, the automated sphygmomanometer was used to take the readings of the systolic blood pressure and the height and weight scale was used to measure the height and weight needed to calculate the body mass index.
Results: The mean intraocular pressure across participants was 16.23 ± 3.67; the mean systolic blood pressure value was 112.82 ± 8.95; and the mean body mass index value was 23.99 ± 4.54.  SPSS version 21 package was used to analyse the data. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient used at 0.05 level of significance and 95% confidence interval showed that there was only a significant positive correlation between intraocular pressure and systolic blood pressure (P 0.002 < 0.005) while there were no significant correlations between intraocular pressure and body mass index (P 0.344 > 0.05) and systolic blood pressure and body mass index (P 0.722 > 0.05).
Conclusion: It was therefore concluded from the study that intraocular pressure significantly correlates with systolic blood pressure among patients. Further research investigations in a wider geographical area and more so, consideration of older age range population were recommended.
